On Monday Night last, Lee Elkington of this City, hatter, was committed to Bocardo, charged with stealing 25 Yards of fine Irish Linnen, out of the Shop of Mr. Joseph Fortnom of this Place, Mercer and Haberdasher. - And since the Commitment of Elkington, it appears that he had likewise stolen Hats, Gold lace, Broadcloth, and divers other Goods from the same House, to a very considerable Amount.

Jacksons Oxford Journal, 19 Jan 1771

On Thursday last, at our General Quarter Sessions, Lee Elkington of this Place, by Trade a Hatter, was found guilty of stealing two Pieces of Irish Cloth, the property of Mr. Joseph Fortnom of this City, Mercer, and sentenced to be transported for seven Years. - One Wolfe, a Jew Pedlar, and his Brother, who had sevrally entered into Recognizances to appear and give Evidence against the Prisoner, upon another Felony of the same Kind, had both absconded.

Lee Elkington, under sentence of Transportation in our City Goal, for robbing Mr. Fortnom of this City, Mercer, has received a Pardon on Condition of enlisting himself in the Troops of the East India Company; and Orders are given for his being immediately removed to Portsmouth to be put on board.

To Edward Clerke, Deputy Sherriff for the County of Oxford)

Whitehall March 8 1771

Sir

I received yesterday with much Surprise the favour of your letter of the 3 rd . inst. I can only assure you in answer that no Mistake has been made in this office with respect to the name of the convict in Oxford Goal. whom by Lord Halifax's direction I desir'd you to detain from transportation till farthere orders. You will see by the inclos'd papers (which you will be pleased to return to me) that Lee Elkington is the Name, as far as appears the only name of the convict, whom Mr. Justice Naires, as Recorder of Oxford, tried there and recommended for mercy on account of his youth………….

Lee now went to join the East India Company Army and left for Portsmouth soon after his trial.

At his death he was classed as a pauper, his wife died in the workhouse at Southwark and was buried at St. Olave's church. It is not known what happened to their daughter Sarah.
